My Brief Political Career

by John P. Pratt

I was elected but resigned after a few days in office!

Meet Your Candidate (Feb 1972).
In graduate school at the University of Arizona in Tucson, I had just finished reading Gary Allen's None Dare Call It Conspiracy (1972), which came highly recommended by Elder Ezra Taft Benson, an LDS apostle. Now I too endorse that book which changed my life, making me aware of the hidden dark forces of government. The book recommended that everyone get involved in politics to help preserve our freedom.

I finished the book five days before the coming election (primary, as I recall). I ran down to the Republican headquarters in Tucson and asked what was still open that I could run for with only a few signatures. They suggested "Precinct Committeeman", which only needed five signatures. I had no idea what that was, but I had five friends in student housing, so off I ran and got the signatures. I was able to return with the needed petition before the deadline at 5 pm that same day!

My name was listed first of two on the ballot and (probably for that reason) I won! Hurray, I had been elected to office!!

With wide-eyed anticipation I went to my first meeting. It was a scene right of a movie: a smoked filled room with the head Republican guy with a big cigar announcing what odds were being given by Jimmy the Greek in Las Vegas about the election! (No kidding, that is true!) It turned out my job was to get Nixon elected! It was a job in the Republican party! I had no idea.

I immediately resigned from office because I was going to vote for John Schmitz of the American Independent Party (he came in third with 1.4%, not too bad)! I already knew that Nixon had been bought by the Rockefellers in a secret meeting in Chicago, so he was part of the problem I was there to fight against! There was no way I could vote for either Nixon (R) or McGovern (D).

And thus ended my very brief foray into politics!
